The most common method for assessing the strength of concrete is by measuring its strength after 28 days of construction; this is referred to as the grade of concrete. A grade of 20 Megapascal or MPa is referred to as M20 grade concrete and is ideal for Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC). A beginner’s guide to M20 concrete ratio
The measure of strength that this cement contains of 20 MPa or 20 N/mm is known as M20. This ratio actually represents one of the particular proportions of the ingredients used to create a concrete of moderate strength. The three constituents in the M20 concrete are cement, sand, and aggregates. The M20 ratio is equal to 1:1.5:3, representing the respective proportion of cement, sand, and aggregates used.
According to the ratio, M20 cement contains 1 part of cement, which is mixed with 1.5 parts sand and 3 parts aggregates. The cohesive mixture so formed is known as M20 concrete, promising strength, workability, and cost-effectiveness. Being a standard-grade concrete, M20 concrete has found immense usage in diverse construction projects due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness.
Uses of M20 concrete ratio
M20 concrete finds various applications, such as follows:
Residential construction: M20 concrete is universally used to build foundations, slabs, and columns for residential projects. It specifically provides adequate strength when it comes to low-rise structures. M20 cement is also durable and provides a smooth surface that requires longevity against wear and tear. It is best used for flooring that expects light foot traffic or very light equipment load.
We differentiate the M20-grade from M25 concrete ratio by its compressive strength. M20-grade cement offers a compressive strength of 20 MPa or 2900 psi approximately, whereas grade M25 exhibits a compressive strength of 25 MPa or 3625 psi. M25 is more suitable for building load-bearing structures as it offers resistance to cracking or breaking under tension. M25 is also more brittle than M20 concrete, despite having a modulus elasticity of 25000 MPa compared to that of M20’s 22360 MPa modulus elasticity.
